Somewhere in My Dreams, A Desert of Glass and Death

When I’d gone to sleep, I’d fully expected to be transported into the comforting pit of embers. I even half-expected James to drag me into his realm, the foggy wasteland of cold and confusion. Instead, I stared at an endless sea of glass. The ground underneath my feet was as still as a mirror, and endless shards spurted from the ground as glimmering crystal spears. This world was neither hot nor cold. It wasn’t anything at all. I felt as if here, I didn’t breathe, the air didn’t move, and even time stood still.

“So,” James said, appearing from behind a speckling pillar, “you wanted to talk?”

I blinked at him. “Where is this?”

He eyed the expanse of fused glass. “This is the information you seek.”

I followed his gaze. “Is that so?” I asked, not hiding my sarcasm.

He shook his head slowly, as if having to patiently explain something to a child. “This was once sand. Every grain was a person, a soul. Now,” he swept out his tattooed hands, “it’s just an expanse of melted death.”

“My kind did this?” I asked. I took another look at the expanse. It was beautiful, but desolate and inanimate. Had it once felt alive?

He nodded. “Yes.”

“Did my parents have anything to do with this?”

He blinked at me, seeming caught off guard by my question. “No. We’d thought your parents dead for quite some time. I guess that’s why it made it so easy for them to hide you from us.”

Relief washed over me that my parents, at least, hadn’t taken part in this destruction. “So, where are they now?”

He shrugged. “I’d stop trying to look for them if I were you.”

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

He sighed. “Look. They’re in a safe place.” He waved he arms to the air. “Do you really want to bring them here? You’re a target that needs to stay hidden.” His hands dropped. “The best thing you can do for them is to stay out of trouble.”

I swallowed. Had he known I’d nearly gotten the Feds called on me?

The shadow that swept over his eyes said that he did.

Feeling dizzy, I steadied myself against a glass pillar. I expected it to feel cold, but it felt like hollow glass that was unable to leach my heat.

He gave me a grin. “Want to break some rules?”

I perked up. “Okay.”

He held out his hand. “Come with me. I’ll show you what this place should look like.”

I took his hand without hesitation. If I got James to trust me, then maybe he’d help me make Nimrock safe again and my parents could return.

A dizzying wave of ice speared where his skin touched mine, but I gripped down on his fingers hard.

We transported out of the glass wasteland. Gusts of grainy winds whipped my hair around my face and I squeezed my eyes shut. A powerful wave of nausea ripped through me and I swallowed bile.

“Stop resisting me,” James chided.

With a gasp I opened my eyes. I let the ice in, not realizing that I’d kept pushing it away.
